How a plumber gets more leads in 2026: every channel, ranked by cost
Short answer
A plumber gets more leads by using the free channels first. Call back past customers. Complete your Google Business Profile. Ask every customer for a review. Answer or text back every missed call. Then add paid channels in order of cost. Google Local Services Ads cost $66.11 per plumbing lead in Q2 2026.

Plumbing is one trade. For every trade side by side, see how to get contractor leads and what a lead costs by trade.
Past customers and referrals
- Cost: Free
- How fast: Days, once you have a list
- Best for: Repeat work, replacements, referrals
Past customers already trust you. They also own the same pipes, water heater and drains next year.
The plumbing move: write down what you installed and when. A customer whose water heater you serviced is a future replacement job. A customer whose main line you cleared may need it again. A short text before that happens is the cheapest lead you will ever get.
Ask for referrals the day the job is done, while the customer is still pleased.
Where LeadHunter USA fits. LeadHunter USA CRM is free. It keeps every customer with notes, a stage, and their quotes, invoices and receipts, so you can see who to call back. See the free CRM for contractors.
Google Business Profile
- Cost: Free
- How fast: Weeks to months
- Best for: Calls from people searching for a plumber nearby
Your Business Profile is the listing in Google Maps and the local results. Google says local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” Google also says: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.”
- Choose Plumber as the primary category.
- Add each service you want calls for, such as drain cleaning or water heater installation.
- Set hours you can really answer. If you take emergency calls at night, say so.
- Add photos of real jobs, not stock images.
The plumbing move: most plumbers work at the customer’s home. Google calls that a service-area business. Google’s rule: “If you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile.” You can list up to 20 service areas, within about 2 hours of driving from your base.

Reviews
- Cost: Free
- How fast: Builds with every job
- Best for: Winning the call once you are found
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Reviews also decide which plumber a homeowner calls.
BrightLocal surveyed 1,002 US consumers for its 2026 review survey. 97% read reviews for local businesses. 74% look for reviews written in the last three months.
The plumbing move: ask on the day of the job, by text, with the direct review link. A steady flow matters more than a burst, because customers look at recent reviews. Reply to every review, good or bad. Wording you can send is in how to ask for a Google review by text.

Stop losing the leads you already get
- Cost: Free to low
- How fast: Immediate
- Best for: Every other channel on this page
Every channel here ends in a call or a message. If nobody answers, the lead goes to the next plumber.
Harvard Business Review studied how fast companies answer online leads. Firms that tried to reach a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited an hour longer. They were more than 60 times as likely as firms that waited 24 hours or more. The study covered many industries, not plumbing alone.
- Missed calls: forward unanswered calls, or text back within minutes.
- Quotes: follow up on every open quote on a set day. Water heaters and repipes are often quoted against other plumbers.
- Payment: take a card on the spot, so the job closes the same day.
How to set up forwarding is in forward only unanswered calls. Follow-up wording is in estimate follow-up texts.

Website and service pages
- Cost: Your time, or a one-time build
- How fast: Months
- Best for: Planned jobs: repipes, water heaters, remodels
A website helps people who compare plumbers before they call. It is slow to bring work from search.
- Put your phone number at the top of every page, as a tap-to-call link.
- Make one page per main service: water heaters, drain cleaning, leak repair, repiping.
- State the areas you serve, your hours and your license number.
- Show photos of your own work and your reviews.
The plumbing move: emergency callers decide in seconds, so the phone number matters most. Replacement jobs are researched, so the service pages matter most.
Local Facebook groups
- Cost: Free to read. LeadHunter USA Alerts is $75 a month flat.
- How fast: Minutes, if you see the post
- Best for: Same-day leaks, clogged drains, running toilets
Some homeowners ask their neighbors instead of searching. “Anyone know a good plumber?” is a common post in local Facebook groups. The plumber who replies early with a clear answer often gets the call.
The plumbing move: join the neighborhood and town groups in the areas you serve. Reply fast, by first name, with a time you can come. How to reply is in how to get jobs from local Facebook groups.
The hard part is seeing the post while you are under a sink.
Where LeadHunter USA fits. LeadHunter USA Alerts sends you a phone alert when a neighbor in your area asks for a plumber, with a link to the post, so you can be one of the first to reply. You reply yourself, from your own account. It costs $75 a month or $720 a year, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card. See LeadHunter USA for plumbers.
Google Local Services Ads
- Cost: $66.11 per plumbing lead on average, Q2 2026
- How fast: Immediate
- Best for: Emergency calls and steady volume
Local Services Ads appear at the top of Google for searches like “plumber near me”. You pay per lead, not per click.
99 Calls measured $66.11 per plumbing lead in Q2 2026. The dataset covered 4,459 leads and $258,867 of spend across trades.
The plumbing move: answer the phone. Google counts a missed call during your business hours as a valid lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. So a missed call can cost you the lead price and the job. Leads Google finds invalid are not charged, and you can dispute others.
To get the Google Verified badge, you pass Google’s screening. In the US that includes your license or business registration and, depending on the category, reviews. Listings without the badge appear below those with it.

Google search ads
- Cost: $8.33 per click, $90.92 per lead (home services medians)
- How fast: Immediate
- Best for: Specific high-value jobs you choose
Search ads charge per click, and you choose the keywords. WordStream and LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmarks put the “Home & Home Improvement” category at $8.33 per click and $90.92 per lead. Those are medians for the whole category, not plumbing alone.
The plumbing move: bid on the jobs worth the most to you, such as water heater replacement or sewer line repair. Send each ad to the matching service page, with your phone number at the top.

Lead marketplaces
- Cost: Per lead, often shared with other pros
- How fast: Immediate
- Best for: Filling gaps, if you answer within minutes
Marketplaces such as Angi and Thumbtack charge per lead. The same request can go to several pros, so the homeowner often hears from more than one plumber.
They publish no fixed price list for plumbing leads that we could verify, so this page gives no number. What the marketplaces are known to charge is in what a lead costs by trade.
The plumbing move: use them only if someone can answer within minutes, and track how many leads you win.
Cost per lead is not cost per job
A lead is a call or a message. A job is a lead you win.
Cost per job is the cost per lead divided by how often you win. At $66.11 a lead, winning one lead in three makes each job cost about $198. Winning one in two makes it about $132.
That is why the free channels come first. Reviews and fast answers raise your win rate on every paid lead.
Which channel first?
| Your situation | Start with | Add next |
|---|---|---|
| New plumber, no reviews | Business Profile, reviews from your first customers, local groups, answering every call | Local Services Ads once you meet Google’s requirements |
| Established, with past customers | Call back past customers, a steady review flow, missed-call follow-up | Local Services Ads for volume, search ads for one high-value job type |
| Mostly emergency work | Channels that bring calls today: Local Services Ads, Business Profile, local groups | Someone or something that answers every call |
| Mostly planned work (water heaters, repipes) | Service pages, reviews, quote follow-up | Search ads on the job types you want most |
Whatever you choose, measure it. Write down where each customer came from and which leads you won. After a month you will know your own cost per job.

Common questions
How can a plumber get more leads in 2026?
Start with the free channels: call back past customers, complete your Google Business Profile, ask every customer for a Google review, and answer or text back every missed call. Then add paid channels in order of cost. Google Local Services Ads cost $66.11 per plumbing lead in Q2 2026, according to 99 Calls.
How much does a plumbing lead cost on Google Local Services Ads?
$66.11 per lead on average in Q2 2026 (April to June). That figure comes from 99 Calls, which measured 4,459 leads and $258,867 of real US contractor spend across trades. Your own price depends on your city, the job type and competition.
Do I pay for a Local Services Ads call I miss?
It can count as a lead. Google says a missed call during your business hours is a valid lead when the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Leads Google judges invalid are not charged, and you can dispute others.
What is the cheapest way for a plumber to get more work?
Your past customers. They already trust you, and a call or text costs nothing. Next come your Google Business Profile and reviews, which are also free. Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
Should a new plumber buy leads?
Usually not first. Without reviews, you are less likely to win a lead you paid for. Set up your Business Profile, ask your first customers for reviews, join the local groups where neighbors ask for plumbers, and answer every call. Add paid leads when you can answer them within minutes.
Do local Facebook groups bring plumbing jobs?
Yes. Neighbors post “anyone know a good plumber?” in local groups, and the first clear reply often gets the call. The hard part is seeing the post in time. LeadHunter USA Alerts sends you a phone alert when a neighbor in your area asks for a plumber, with a link to the post. It costs $75 a month after a 7-day free trial with no credit card.
What should a plumber do with missed calls?
Call or text back within the hour. Harvard Business Review found firms that tried to reach a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that waited an hour longer. Forwarding unanswered calls and an automatic text back both help. LeadHunter USA Line, a business number with missed-call text back, is coming soon.
