What to post in local Facebook groups — and when not to
Local groups can keep your name in front of the neighbors who will need you next month. They can also get you removed in a day. The difference is reading each group’s rules first. Here is how, what to post when it’s allowed, and ideas for 25 trades.
Read the group rules before you post
Every group sets its own. Admins can pin them to the group — Facebook lets them add rules that members see — and they can remove posts and remove or ban members who break them. These are the patterns you’ll meet most:

Asking an admin
“Hi — I’m Mike, a local plumber in Maple Grove and a member of the group. Is it OK to post about my business here, and if so, is there a day or a thread you’d like me to use? Thanks for running the group.”
When not to post
- Right after a post of yours was removed. Read the rules again, or ask the admin why.
- The same post in many groups on the same day. It reads as spam to admins and neighbors.
- Inside somebody else’s thread when they did not ask for help — a lost-dog post is not a place for a flyer.
- When you are not sure it is allowed. Ask first; getting removed from a good local group costs more than one post is worth.
Five posts that work, when posting is allowed
Before and after. Two photos and one line: what was wrong and what you did. The single most convincing post a trade can make.
A short tip. “3 signs your…” or “Before you call anyone, check…”. Useful to everybody, so admins rarely mind it.
A seasonal reminder. Timed to what neighbors are about to need: gutters before winter, AC before summer, heating before the first cold night.
A finished job. Only with the customer’s permission, never their address. “Just finished a fence repair in Oak Park.”
Availability. “I have two openings this week in Maple Grove.” Short, local, and exactly what someone with a problem wants to read.
How often: follow each group’s limit first. As a rule of thumb, no more than once a week in any one group, and two or three times a week on your own Page or profile. Lead with a photo, name the town, keep it to a few lines, and skip the hard sell.

Handyman — post ideas
- Before and after: “Sticky door that wouldn’t close — planed and rehung, closes with one finger now.”
- The small-jobs list: “Got a list of little things that never get done? TV mounting, blinds, shelves, caulking — I do them in one visit.”
- Seasonal: “Fall list: weather-strip the doors, check the smoke detectors, clean the dryer vent.”

Plumber — post ideas
- A short tip: “Water heater making popping sounds? That’s sediment. Flushing it once a year adds years to its life.”
- Before and after: “Corroded shut-off valve under the sink, replaced in 30 minutes — no more drip.”
- Seasonal: “First freeze this week: disconnect your garden hoses and know where your main shut-off is.”
- Availability: “I can take two leak or clog calls tomorrow in Maple Grove.”
Gardener — post ideas
- Before and after: “Overgrown side yard, cleared, edged and mulched in one afternoon.”
- Seasonal: “Now is the time to cut back perennials and put down mulch before the frost.”
- A short tip: “Brown patches in the lawn? Try watering deeply twice a week instead of a little every day.”
- Availability: “I have a few openings for fall cleanups in the next two weeks.”

Common questions
Can I advertise my business in local Facebook groups?
Only where the group allows it. Each group sets its own rules, often pinned at the top: some ban promotion entirely, some allow it on one day or in one thread, and local business groups exist for exactly that. Admins can remove posts and remove or ban members who break the rules, so read them before you post.
What should a contractor post on Facebook?

They do different jobs. Posting keeps your name familiar so neighbors think of you. Replying quickly to someone who asked "anyone know a good…?" is where most jobs actually come from. Do both, and never let posting get in the way of a fast reply.
