How much do contractor postcards cost, and how many jobs pay for them?

A postcard mailing has one fixed cost and one that varies. The postage is set by USPS: $0.26 a card for Every Door Direct Mail at the counter. The printing depends on your printer. Put your printer’s quote into the calculator below to see the full cost, and how many jobs the mailing has to bring in before it pays for itself.

The short answer

EDDM postage is $0.26 per card at a post office counter (EDDM Retail, USPS prices through 17 January 2027), so 1,000 homes cost $260 in postage before printing. Printing depends on your printer’s quote. USPS publishes no EDDM response rate, so work out how many jobs pay for the mailing.

Will it pay back? What the studies measured

There is no published response rate for Every Door Direct Mail, from USPS or from the ANA, the association that publishes the best-known direct-mail response report. Here is what the sources we could open actually say, with the year and what was measured:

  • ANA, 2021 report (press release, January 2022): “The mail format that produced the best ROI to ‘house’ lists was postcards (92 percent).” A house list is your own past customers, so this says postcards work well to people who already know you.
  • USPS Household Diary Study, fiscal 2013: “55 percent of households usually read their advertising mail, while an additional 21 percent scan their mail,” and households “intend to respond to about one in ten pieces of advertising mail.” Intent, as reported by the household; not orders.
  • Canada Post, “A Bias for Action”, 2015: in a test with 270 people, “recall was 70% higher if they were exposed to a direct mail piece (75%) rather than a digital ad (44%).” A study paid for by a postal service, in Canada.

What that means for you: none of these tells you how many calls 1,000 cards will bring in your area. Your break-even does: if the calculator says 3 jobs pay for the mailing, the question is whether 3 of those 1,000 homes need your trade in the next few weeks.

Know which calls came from the card

A mailing you can’t measure is one you can’t repeat on purpose. Three ways to tell:

  • A QR code that goes to its own page, so every visit from that page came from the card.
  • A phone number used only on the card, so every call to it came from the mailing.
  • Ask, and write it down: “How did you hear about us?” on every new call, kept with the customer.

The rules for the card itself, from sizes to the mail panel, are in EDDM postcards for contractors, and what to write on it is in what to put on a contractor postcard.

Questions

Common questions

How much does it cost to mail 1,000 postcards with EDDM?

Postage for 1,000 EDDM Retail cards is $260 ($0.26 each, USPS prices through 17 January 2027). Printing is extra and depends on your printer, the size, the paper and the quantity, so get a quote for the exact card.

What is a good response rate for contractor postcards?

USPS and the ANA do not publish a response rate for EDDM, and figures you see on printer websites are rarely traced to a study. The useful number is your own break-even: how many jobs the mailing has to bring in to pay for itself, which the calculator on this page works out.

Is EDDM cheaper than addressed postcards?

At the post office counter, yes: a First-Class postcard is $0.65 each, and EDDM Retail is $0.26 (USPS Notice 123). Presorted addressed mail costs less than a single stamp but needs a permit and a list of addresses. EDDM saves the list; addressed mail lets you choose the homes.

Do I pay for postage and printing separately?

With EDDM Retail, yes: you pay the printer for the cards and pay USPS the postage when you drop them off or online. A printer or mail house that mails for you through a BMEU may bill both on one invoice; ask.
