Can your phone text back missed calls on its own?
Short answer: not by itself. iPhone, Samsung and Pixel phones can each send a text when you decline a ringing call, and some can answer for you in other ways. None of the maker pages we read describes a setting that texts every caller you miss. Here is what each phone does, quoted from Apple, Samsung and Google on 4 October 2026.

The short answer
- Decline with a text: all three makers document it. You tap or swipe while the phone rings, and the caller gets a short text from your number.
- Automatic replies: iPhone’s Driving Focus auto-replies to messages. Pixel’s Take a Message answers missed calls with a voice greeting and records the caller.
- A text to every caller you miss, with nobody touching the phone: not described on any of the maker pages we read.
iPhone
Respond with Text (when you decline a call)
From Apple’s answer or decline incoming calls page: when a call comes in, tap the call banner for more options, then “Tap Message, then choose a default reply or tap Custom.” (Swiping up on the banner declines the call without a text.) To write your own default replies: “go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Respond with Text, tap any field below Respond With, then type your own reply.”
That works for a call you see ringing. A call you never saw (on a ladder, under a sink) rings out to voicemail with no text.
Driving Focus Auto-Reply
Apple’s Driving Focus page: “With Auto-Reply, favorites and those you allow notifications from will get an auto reply when you have the Driving Focus on.” The path is Settings, Focus, Driving, Auto-Reply, where you pick No One, Recents, Favorites or All Contacts and write “the auto-reply message that people get when they message you while a Driving Focus is on.”
What it covers: people who message you, chosen from those four groups. Apple’s page does not describe it replying to phone calls, and a new customer is rarely in your contacts.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung calls it Quick decline messages. From Samsung’s support page: “When an incoming call comes through to your phone, swipe up on the screen to view your Quick Decline messages,” then tap the one to send, and the caller sees it in their text messages app. To write your own: open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, Settings, Quick decline messages, then Write new message.
Samsung’s English-language page is written for Australian-model phones; menu names on US models can differ slightly by model and software version. The page describes sending a message while the call is ringing, not after a call you missed.
Pixel and the Phone by Google app
Decline with a message
Google’s Phone app Help: “To reject the call and send a text message to the caller, tap Message.” As on the other phones, you do it while the call is ringing.
Take a Message
Google’s Take a Message page says you can use it “at no charge to handle calls you miss or decline.” It answers the call, plays a greeting (you can record your own), and saves an audio recording and a written transcript on your phone. In the US, live transcription works on Pixel 6 and later. To turn it on: Phone app, Menu, Settings, Take a Message.
What it covers: a voice message, handled on your phone. Google’s page does not describe it texting the caller, and it notes that calls go to your regular voicemail when the phone is off, out of coverage or roaming.

What texting every missed caller takes
The phone’s own replies are personal tools: they come from your personal number, need you to act while it rings, or answer messages instead of calls. Texting every caller you miss takes three pieces the phone doesn’t have:
- The calls you miss have to reach a service. Your carrier’s no-answer forwarding sends only unanswered calls there, and your phone keeps ringing as usual. The code for each carrier.
- A business number to text from. A service can’t send texts from a number on your cell plan, so the text comes from a business number. The setups, free and paid.
- Carrier registration and STOP handling. Business texts go through 10DLC registration, and a reply of STOP has to end the texts. What the rules expect.

The business line LeadHunter USA is testing does what the phone can’t: you keep your number, the calls you miss are forwarded, and each caller gets a text from your business name within seconds, whether you saw the call or not. Replies land in one inbox, on a card for each customer.

Common questions
Can my iPhone automatically text people when I miss their call?
Not according to Apple’s support pages. Apple documents Respond with Text, which sends a text when you decline a ringing call by tapping Message, and Driving Focus Auto-Reply, which replies to people who message you while Driving Focus is on. Neither is described as texting a caller you simply missed.
Where do I change the iPhone’s “Respond with Text” messages?
Apple’s path is Settings > Apps > Phone > Respond with Text. Tap any field below Respond With and type your own reply.
Can a Samsung Galaxy auto-reply to missed calls?
Samsung documents Quick decline messages: when a call comes in, you swipe up and tap a message, and the caller gets it as a text. You edit them in the Phone app under the three-dot menu, Settings, Quick decline messages. Samsung’s page describes sending one while the call is ringing, not automatically after a missed call.
What does Take a Message on a Pixel do?
Google says Take a Message handles calls you miss or decline: it answers the call, plays a greeting, and saves a recording and a transcript on your phone. In the US it offers live transcription on Pixel 6 and later. It takes a voice message; Google’s page does not describe it sending the caller a text.
Why not just use the phone’s built-in reply for my business?
Each built-in reply needs you to act while the phone rings, or answers messages rather than calls, and it comes from your personal number with no business name, no shared inbox and no record per customer. If you want every missed caller to get a text from your business, that takes a service connected to a business number.
