The short answer

The tools fall into four kinds, and the kind matters more than the brand:

  • Business phone apps (Quo, Grasshopper) give you a business number with calls and texts and an automatic text to missed callers. They have the lowest listed prices here and list no review requests or quotes.
  • Field-service software (Jobber, Housecall Pro) runs quotes, scheduling and invoices. Texting, phones and review requests are on higher plans or are add-ons.
  • Messaging and marketing platforms (Podium, Broadly) bundle texting, reviews and more at a higher monthly price.
  • Single-purpose tools do one job: NiceJob sends review requests, TextBackMissedCall texts missed callers.

For a solo contractor, the question is usually which of three things you need in one place: the missed-call text, Google review requests, and quotes and invoices. No tool on this page lists all three on its lowest plan.

Each tool, from its own pages

Jobber

Field-service software

For one user, the pricing page lists Core at $49 a month billed monthly with no commitment ($29 a month billed annually), Connect at $139 ($99) and Grow at $199 ($149). “Connect with customers through two-way SMS” is listed under Grow. Quotes, invoices and online payments are on Core.

Add-ons on the same page: Receptionist at $29 a month (“Never leave a call or text unanswered again”; Jobber says it can answer questions, take requests or book jobs) and Marketing Suite at $99 a month, which Jobber’s Marketing Suite page says sends “automatic requests after every job” for reviews.

Jobber’s help center says its dedicated phone numbers “are meant for text messages only”; calls to that number forward to the phone number in your company settings, if one is listed. Its billing FAQ offers monthly with no commitment, monthly with a 12-month minimum, or annual prepaid, and says all subscriptions renew automatically unless set not to.

Housecall Pro

Field-service software

The pricing page lists Basic at $79 a month billed monthly or $59 billed annually, with one user; Essentials at $189 ($149) with five users; and MAX at $329 ($299) with eight. Basic lists quotes and proposals, invoices and payments, and review management.

Voice is listed as an add-on (“Manage calls, set up flows, and sync customer information”). Its price and whether it texts back missed calls are not stated on the pricing page, so ask. The FAQ says Housecall Pro “does not require long-term contracts.”

Podium

Messaging and review platform

The pricing page lists Core at $399 a month (with review management and AI responses), Pro at $599 a month, and Signature at custom pricing, and asks you to talk to sales. Podium Phones are priced per seat: $30 per user a month for 1–4 users, $25 for five or more. “Missed Call Automation” is listed among the phone features.

The same page says “There is a $500 network optimization fee per location” for phones, and lists a base 10DLC fee of $5 a month for US locations. The contract term is not stated on the pricing page; ask for it in writing.

Quo

Business phone app

Starter is $19 per user a month billed monthly, or $15 billed annually; Business is $33 a month billed monthly. Every plan includes “One new or ported phone number (local or toll-free) per user”, calling and texting to US and Canadian numbers, and voicemail transcripts.

Its plan comparison lists auto-replies: “Automatically respond to texts, missed calls, or voicemails with pre-defined messages.” Texting requires carrier registration, for which The Campaign Registry “collects a one-time fee of $19.50”. The pricing page lists no review requests, quotes or invoices.

Grasshopper

Business phone app

True Solo is $14 a month billed annually ($168 a year), with one user, one number and unlimited calling minutes. Business texting is unlimited and requires registration: $19.50 one-time plus a $1.50 monthly messaging fee. The annual price was the one the page displayed; check the page for monthly billing.

Its plan comparison lists Instant Response: “Automatically send a text to new callers when you can’t answer their call.” Note the word new, and confirm which plan includes it. Service is “provided on a monthly or annual basis.” No review requests or quotes are listed.

NiceJob

Review requests

A review tool, not a phone. Starter is $75 a month and includes “SMS & email review requests”; Pro is $125 a month. The page says “No contracts.” It lists no business number or missed-call texting, so it is usually paired with a phone app.

Broadly

Marketing package

The pricing page lists three packages, each with “$350 onboarding & setup” and billed monthly: Standard at $399 a month, Pro at $699 and Premium at $999. “Missed call SMS text-back” is listed from Pro up; automatic review requests are listed on Premium. The Conversations AI tool on its own starts at $139 a month, and its $149 tier adds “missed call textback”.

The same page also offers a 24/7 AI Workforce package at $799 a month, which lists missed-call text-back and a website; its FAQ says it has no setup fees and no long-term contract.

TextBackMissedCall

Standalone text back

A standalone service. The basic plan is $100 a month plus $100 setup; the page adds $5 a month for the phone number, per-text charges, and a one-time $20 carrier (A2P) charge. It describes the setup as “We will create a new phone number for your business and forward your original number to it.” An AI upgrade is $200 a month more. No review requests or quotes are listed.

What to ask any vendor before you sign

Q1

Is the number mine to take with me?

Ask whether you can port the number out if you leave, and whether there is a fee. If the service gave you the number, it is the one your customers will save.

Q2

Who registers my business with the carriers?

Business texts from a 10-digit number need A2P 10DLC registration. Ask who files it, what it costs, and how long approval takes before texts go out.

Q3

Is there a contract, and does it renew on its own?

Some vendors offer monthly and 12-month terms side by side, and some renew automatically. Get the term in writing.

Q4

Do texts come from my number or theirs?

A texting service can’t send from the number on your cell plan. Ask which number the customer sees, and whether replies reach you in the same place.

Q5

What happens to calls I miss?

Ask whether you keep your own number and forward only unanswered calls, or whether customers have to call a new number.

Two of these have their own guides: keep your cell number or get a business number, and what carrier registration and STOP rules require. If you keep your number, the setup step is forwarding only unanswered calls.

Where LeadHunter USA fits

It isn’t in the table because it isn’t for sale yet. We are testing a business line for contractors that puts the three things above in one app: missed-call text back from a local business number with your name in front, Google review requests (how to ask by text), and a customer card with quotes and invoices. Card payments come later. The price will be published at launch, and we will add it to this table the same way, with its own page linked.

Coming soon from LeadHunter USA

The business line LeadHunter USA is testing: your missed calls get a text from your business within seconds, replies land in one inbox, and when the job is done you send a Google review request, a quote or an invoice from the same customer card. You keep your own number.

Does Jobber text back missed calls?

Jobber’s pricing page lists a Receptionist add-on at $29 a month, described as “Never leave a call or text unanswered again”; Jobber says it can answer questions, take requests or book jobs. Two-way SMS is listed on the Grow plan. Do I need carrier registration (10DLC) for missed-call texts?

Which of these tools also do quotes and invoices?

Jobber and Housecall Pro, the two field-service tools, list quotes and invoices on every plan. The phone apps (Quo, Grasshopper), the review tool (NiceJob), Broadly and TextBackMissedCall do not list them on their pricing pages.
